Gythion

Gythion is a historic town and harbour located in the southern Peloponnese near the mouth of the river Evrotas, west of the intimacy of the Laconian gulf. It is built amphitheatrically on the eastern slopes of Mount Larysio and is the main port of the Laconian gulf and the second of the southern Peloponnese after Kalamata.

The southern edge of the town of Gythion is joined via a small pier with a small island, the ancient Kranae or Marathonisi, where the Tower of Tzanetakis, the octagonal Lighthouse (faros Kranaes) and the little church of St. Peter. Gythion is the seat of the municipality which includes 18 districts and headquarters of the Metropolis of Mani.
